While there is an abundance of quality stuff on YouTube for learning Mandarin Chinese, there’s actually very little when you try to focus in on Taiwan, particularly for beginners.
The first two channels on this very short list focus on teaching Chinese from Taiwan and the last two are geared more toward upper intermediate learners who are looking to get comprehension practice in.
Of course, learners of all levels can benefit from these four YouTube channels as #3 and #4 often make videos with character and English subtitles.
Onward!
1.) Fiona Tian
Fiona is a cool mix between Taiwanese and British (& has lived in many countries growing up), which gives her
A.) An awesome accent
B.) A really cool perspective on how to teach the Mandarin language
Her videos are based on interesting topics that you’ll definitely want to know (boba, anyone?), and she’s funny.
My favorite video is this one on how to order breakfast in Taiwan.
2.) Peggy Teaches Chinese
Peggy was one of the very first YouTubers I ever saw teaching Mandarin from Taiwan. While she doesn’t post as frequently anymore, her library of videos up until this point is a treasure trove for anyone wanting to learn the language.
She’s a native Mandarin Chinese speaker and is from Taoyuan, Taiwan.
My favorite video from her is about shopping at a convenience store in Taiwan.
3.) Insect Island
Avalon, besides having a serious passion for insects, makes videos about everything from racism in Taiwan to dog science.
Her Chinese is drool-worthy.
Seriously.
I love this video from her on cultural differences.
4.) Jesus 阿兜仔不教美語
Jesus is from Spain and speaks Chinese/Taiwanese in a Taiwanese accent that makes me jealous.
I also appreciate how his videos have character and English subs.
I like this video from him on cross-cultural romance.
So there you have it. These are four of my favorite people on YouTube who are either teaching Chinese or just speaking in Chinese specifically in regards to Taiwan.
