“It’s a very superficial relationship when you can’t speak each other’s language.”
After she met an Italian study abroad student, Jasmine Mah was inspired to switch from learning Russian to learning la bella lingua.
She realized she needed to kick her learning into high gear when she got engaged to him and met his Italian family and friends who spoke minimal English. She experienced a language barrier that made it hard for her to express herself without feeling like she was coming off as rude.
Since then, Jasmine has graduated from the University of Alberta in Canada and moved to Italy with her fiancé. Through all of the chaos of moving to (and planning a wedding in) a new country, she has developed a strong relationship with the Italian language and the one-of-a-kind Italian culture.
