“I think the food and the culture of Calabria are so connected that through these long meals and through cooking and kitchens with local mammas, people are able to get a better idea of what Calabria and what southern Italy is really about.”
Once you visit southern Italy, you feel like you’ve seen an entirely different world while in the same country, which is what I imagine Cherrye Moore experienced upon moving to Calabria with her native Italian husband.
Cherrye’s story, like many expats, is full of ups and downs with the language and the culture.
What I think is most special about our chat is her favorite parts of Italy, one of which makes you feel at home even if you were never born in Italy.
— How Cherrye got to Calabria in the first place (Hint: There’s love involved.)
— Two shows Cherrye watched religiously to improve her Italian
— Her favorite and least favorite aspects of Italian culture
— Two cultural differences she noticed after dating an Italian
— Two topics that are usually discussed at Italian dinner parties (Brush up on these! ;])
Cherrye’s Favorite Italian Words/Phrases
— Passeggiata – To take a walk
— Veni cca – Come here (Calabrese for “Vieni qua”)
