Below is a list that you can use to remind yourself why you’re learning Italian on the days when the learning gets rough or when you need to convince a fellow friend that Italian is the path for them.
.) You find nuggets of Italian all over the world and then feel like some sort of secret spy that decodes signs.
Like when my dad was watching The Fugitive the other night and the chief says “Andiamo bambini” & I start smiling like someone just gave me chocolate or something and tell him “He just said let’s go kids. That was Italian!” To which my father replied, “Well that’s nice, honey.” But really, maybe your audience will be more receptive than mine.
.) When guests get into your car, especially all of those cute men that you hang out with, and your iPod just happens to shuffle to an Italian song, you get to glow when they compliment you on how impressive you are for speaking Italian.
.) Pasta is a carbohydrate disaster no more. In fact, pasta just became your cooking + Italian lesson mixed into one beautiful dish of pleasure.
.) You can say things like ‘Ciao!’ without feeling douchey. Okay, well people might think that you’re being douchey, but YOU’LL know that you’re really just practicing the language, not trying to appear cultural or anything. I mean, psh, who does that?
.) No you’re not just wasting time on Youtube watching pretty Italian men sing songs about love. YOU’RE LEARNING.
.) You’re learning Italian. That means you gotta go to Italy. That alone makes you pretty cool…and cultured.
.) Then you get to tell your friends for MONTHS things like “Oh, wait, that party is next month? Man, I can’t make it. I’LL BE IN ITALY.” and when you get back “Oh, I missed who’s wedding? That was in June? Oh, I was in Florence then eating Penne Arrabiata. I’ll send a Congrats card.”
.) Suddenly, magically, by divine intervention, all of the people with Italian origins in your area will appear in your life. That means new people to befriend and new people to hide from!
.) The first time you have a conversation in Italian with an American who just happens to speak fluent Italian (it happens! really!), you’ll feel like doing all of those crazy moves people do in the Harlem Shake.
.) It’s beautiful. You get to surround yourself with beauty every single day by letting it into your life.
